To the Editor: BG Council gave in to gun lobbyists

0

We lost a public good this week. On Monday with one unanimous voice and without a single dissenting vote,
our city council delivered a victory to gun lobbyists. Ohioans for Concealed Carry will surely celebrate
their rights to enjoy our lovely amenities by strolling in Simpson Garden or swimming at our city pool,
with their guns carried with pride.
Our city council said they pained over the wording of their gun ordinance which they say makes us
compliant with state law, by only prohibiting weapons in violation of Ohio Revised Code. But in their
discussion, it became quickly clear that not a single councilperson, not even the lawyers among them,
knew
what weapons are in violation of ORC. So, they drafted and passed an gun ordinance they do not fully
understand in order to appease gun lobbyists who want to erode our rights to Home Rule. They voted their
consciences. And they voted their consciences in a comfortable air-conditioned city chamber that is
gunfree by law.
