On Election Day, City of Bowling Green voters will determine whether or not to amend our City Charter.
I urge people to vote no on the City Charter Amendment.
The stated purpose of the amendment is to prohibit fracking in the City of Bowling Green. Fracking is already prohibited in the City of Bowling Green by ordinance. In fact, fracking would constitute a criminal act in our city under current law.
Unfortunately, the language of the amendment, which is two and a half pages long, single-spaced, goes way beyond fracking. The City of Bowling Green Board of Public Utilities has already determined that our electric rates will almost immediately be increased by 86 percent, while our water and sewer rates will increase by 35 percent.
While the language of the amendment may not be clear as to its effect on fracking in the future, it absolutely will have a detrimental effect with respect to our utility expenses, and ultimately will be a job killer for our city.
The proposal has no redeeming quality. It deserves a resounding no vote.
