Ohio auditor subpoenas JobsOhio financial records

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio state auditor has issued a subpoena seeking the financial records for Gov. John Kasich's (KAY'-sik's) private nonprofit job-creation entity.

Auditor Dave Yost tells The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/WVJV0h ) in an article Thursday that the subpoena follows several months of negotiations between his office and JobsOhio's chief financial officer.

Yost, a fellow Republican, asserts that his office has the legal authority to review the private entity's finances and tells the newspaper JobsOhio is not cooperating.

A Kasich spokesman said the administration supports Yost auditing taxpayer money going to JobsOhio, but his authority regarding its private funds is less clear.

Kasich created JobsOhio in 2011 to speed up Ohio's existing economic development efforts. The board has raised continual privacy concerns and is the subject of a lawsuit questioning its constitutionality.

Detroit taking pass on bid for 2024 Olympics

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is taking a pass on the idea of making a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Bing announced the decision Thursday in a statement, citing millions of dollars needed for the bid process even before such an event. He says the city must decline to participate, citing the "timing and uncertainty of Detroit's long-term financial stability."

Bing acknowledged this week that an emergency manager will be appointed to oversee Detroit's finances. The city's budget deficit is at $327 million. It also has long-term debt topping $14 billion and has had trouble in recent months making payroll and paying other bills.

The U.S. Olympic Committee last month sent letters to mayors of a number of cities to gauge interest in a potential bid for the Summer Olympics.

Ohio college won't block female genital photos

CINCINNATI (AP) — The University of Cincinnati says it won't interfere with an outdoor display of female genitalia photos on campus.

The college's LGBTQ Alliance and UC Feminists say the 12 photos of vaginas are meant to cause discussion aimed at discrimination and exploitation of women's bodies. The project called Re-envisioning the Female Body also wants to counter an anti-abortion demonstration on campus last year.

Critics of the temporary display planned Thursday and Friday have complained that is pandering obscenity and could be viewed by young children.

University President Santa Ono (OH'-noh) says in a statement that UC is an academic community where ideas and images are analyzed and debated, however controversial and complex they might be. He also says the school is a public institution obligated to protect the First Amendment.

Franklin County, Ohio, prosecutor seeks dozens of gun indictments
Written by By Associated Press
Thursday, 07 March 2013 12:24

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio prosecutor says his office recently sought grand jury indictments for more than 60 people accused of violating the state's gun laws.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien's office said Thursday that the alleged felony crimes included illegal carry of a concealed weapon, having a weapon under disability or felony, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

The indictments, which date back to Feb. 1, were sought by the office's Gun Unit, which is made up of five full-time prosecutors who handle guns or illegal weapons cases exclusively. Most of the cases last year were referred by the Columbus police.

The office said that between 2010 and 2012, the prosecutors closed 1,126 gun cases with a conviction rate of more than 98 percent.
