DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is recalling about 500 pickup trucks and SUVs to fix faulty air bag controls, its 30th recall so far this year.

The company is in the midst of a companywide safety review after it mishandled the recall of more than 2.6 million older small cars with faulty ignition switches. GM has acknowledged knowing about the switch problem for more than a decade before it began recalling the cars in February.

Tree planting at contaminated park prompts concern

DETROIT (AP) — The presence of workers in protective suits preparing contaminated parkland in southwest Detroit for tree plantings has upset some residents who have sought for years to have problems at the site addressed.

The soil at Bridgeview Park is contaminated with chemicals including arsenic and lead, The Detroit News reported (http://bit.ly/1vQZSmv ). Plantings at the park are among many across the city this year by The Greening of Detroit, which says new trees will help remove contamination.

On Monday, a dozen residents met with officials from the nonprofit to voice their frustrations, including potential health threats caused by digging, possible increases in the local rodent population and their lack of input on the project.

"This is unconscionable — against humanity," resident Emma Lockridge said. "I say you're doing this only because we're black people. You would never go into Ferndale and do this. You would never go into Southfield and do this, go into a Birmingham playground and just start digging and treating people like guinea pigs."

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Colin Montgomerie knows two of the players to watch in a senior major are Bernhard Langer and Tom Watson, so playing alongside them in the first two rounds of the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores worked out well.

Watson shot a 3-under 68 on Friday for a share of the lead with fellow Hall of Famers Langer and Montgomerie and three other players.

"Tom had a great finish last week in the Regions Tradition major and Langer is always there, so I felt that if I was equal or around them after two days, I would be quite happy," Montgomerie said. "I was and I am and it gives me an opportunity to go forward at the weekend."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Regulators have closed a small lender in Ohio, marking the eighth U.S. bank failure of 2014 after 24 closures last year.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said Friday that it has taken over Cincinnati-based Columbia Savings Bank.

The lender, which operated a single branch, had about $36.5 million in assets and $29.5 million in deposits as of March 31.

United Fidelity Bank, based in Evansville, Indiana, has agreed to assume Columbia Savings' deposits and to buy essentially all of the failed bank's assets.
