INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana health officials say a western Indiana resident has died of West Nile virus, the first reported death this year in Indiana from the mosquito-borne disease.
State Department of Health spokeswoman Amanda Turney says the person who died was a Vigo County resident. No other details about the victim were released.
The Health Department says 20 human cases have been reported this year and mosquito samples in 87 counties have tested positive for West Nile virus. Last year, 77 human cases and eight deaths were reported in Indiana.
Some people who get the virus develop a more severe form of the disease with encephalitis or meningitis and other severe syndromes. The peak season is August and September
