COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A 16-year-old boy who lived in a nearby group home has been charged in the weekend slaying of a woman who was jogging in a central Ohio park.
Police in Blendon Township, northeast of Columbus, said 55-year-old Jane Juergens was killed Sunday on a trail at Ridgewood Park in Westerville. She had been stabbed multiple times.
On Monday police charged the teen with a juvenile count of murder. They say he lived in a county supervised group home nearby with three other boys.
A staff member of the group home called police Sunday night after the teen began acting suspiciously after a visit to the park Sunday afternoon, according to a search warrant affidavit.
The staff member told police he met the boy coming out of the woods, shortly after a woman got out of a car and started jogging. The staff member said the boy had scratches on him and a bruise under his eye. He told the staff member that he had tripped and fallen.
Township Police Chief John Belford said Juergens and the boy did not know each other.
Franklin County Children Services told The Columbus Dispatch that the boy had been at the group home since August 2012 and in the care of the agency off and on since 2010.
His juvenile record includes charges of assault for striking another person at the group home over the head with a bathroom scale in July. Records also show he hit a younger brother in the face with a broomstick at his grandmother's home in 2010.
Prosecutors have filed a motion asking for the murder charge against the boy to be transferred to adult court. A probable cause hearing was set for Oct. 30.
Juergens, the mother of two adult sons, had worked for American Municipal Power for 22 years as vice president of human resources, the Dispatch reported. She left this year to start her own consulting company.
