COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A new report says the cost of lost or
stolen Ohio prison inmate property rose 28 percent over the past five
years.
The report by the state’s Correctional Institution
Inspection Committee says the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville
in central Ohio paid $12,243 in property reimbursements during that
time, the most statewide.
The report released Monday says the
facilities with the highest reimbursement rates last year were Franklin
Medical Center in Columbus and the state’s highest security
institutions.
The report says prisons reimbursed inmates a total
of $128,011 from 2009 through 2013 for property loss, a figure that does
not include awards through the Ohio Court of Claims.
The
bipartisan prison inspection committee says Ohio is improving the
training of guards related to packing up inmates’ belongings.
