MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a driver died and a woman suffered critical injuries when a brief, high-speed police chase ended in a crash in southwest Ohio.

Troopers say the male driver and his passenger were ejected after the fleeing car hit stop sticks set out by police. The driver lost control and struck a utility pole in Middletown on Tuesday, shortly after midnight.

The man died. The injured woman was flown to a hospital.

Police tell The Cincinnati Enquirer the chase had started when an officer tried to stop the vehicle for traveling at twice the speed limit. The driver fled, and the subsequent four-minute chase reached speeds up to 110 mph.

State Highway Patrol Sgt. Dexter Howard tells the newspaper that speed and alcohol are considered factors in the crash.
