CLEVELAND (AP) — Clevelanders have said a dramatic goodbye to the old Inner Belt Bridge along Interstate
90.
The
giant structure that carried traffic over the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh)
River for 55 years was demolished early Saturday in a cloud of smoke
and dust.
The Plain Dealer reports (http://bit.ly/1r8er4D)
thousands of spectators came out for the show. They lined a grassy bluff
that overlooked the bridge with cellphone cameras held high.
The
structure was blown apart by a half-second blast of 182 pounds of
explosives placed at 88 points along the bridge. The detonation sent
more than 10 million pounds of steel crashing into the Cuyahoga River
Valley below.
The bridge was designed to carry 100,000 vehicles a
day, but had been carrying 140,000. A replacement bridge along I-90 is
now in place.
