COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Police in central Ohio say a man in jail awaiting trial on rape and kidnapping charges tried to arrange the murder of his alleged victim.

Columbus police said 22-year-old Jamal Stafford was charged with felony conspiracy on Thursday.

Stafford had been indicted on charges of rape and kidnapping for allegedly attacking a 22-year-old woman on Nov. 24. Investigators said that while he was in jail, he tried to hire someone to kill the woman so she couldn't testify against him.

But, investigators said, Stafford ended up dealing with an undercover Columbus police officer, making a cash advance and promising to pay the balance when the woman was dead.

Stafford remains in jail.
