Ohio animal shelter reopens after parvo deaths

HEATH, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio animal shelter is
reopening after parvovirus killed a litter of puppies and forced a
shutdown and cleaning.
The shelter in Heath in Licking County,
east of Columbus, had closed to the public earlier this month after the
puppies contracted the contagious viral disease and died.
The shelter plans to reopen on Monday, and will offer reduced adoption fees for some dogs and cats.
Shelter executive director Lori Carlson said all animals brought into the shelter are vaccinated for
parvovirus.
The
virus spreads through direct contact with other dogs or through fecal
matter. Health experts said the virus can also be spread by humans via
fecal matter on shoes. It does not threaten humans.
