MANTON, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a homemade cannon exploded while a man was trying to load it in northern Michigan, seriously injuring the man.

The Cadillac News and MLive.com report Wexford County deputies responded Sunday afternoon to the home near Manton, about 25 miles southeast of Traverse City.

The department says the 48-year-old man who lived at the home was loading the cannon, which was designed to make noise. The man was reported to be conscious when taken by helicopter to a hospital in Traverse City for treatment of his injuries.

Sheriff's officials are working to determine if the cannon was legal to own. The case is expected to be turned over to prosecutors for review.
