ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) — Prosecutors say a man suspected of extorting more than $100,000 from a northeast Ohio priest has been sentenced to seven years in prison in a plea deal.
Ohio's attorney general and Ashtabula County prosecutors said Tuesday that 27-year-old Brian Gaster conned a priest in Jefferson to fund a drug addiction. They said Gaster told the priest he had a very ill child and needed ransom money because a relative had been kidnapped.
Investigators determined the priest gave Gaster personal savings and parish money totaling $133,000 over the course of a year.
Gaster had pleaded guilty to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. Prosecutors said he was ordered to pay restitution.
A message seeking comment was left for Gaster's attorney.
