TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The mother of a 1-year-old girl missing for nearly two weeks was charged with felony child endangering and was in jail Thursday as authorities and volunteers continued their search for a girl who is feared dead.

Investigators say that Angela Steinfurth knew her daughter had been seriously injured and didn't seek medical help. They would not say what type of injuries the toddler had or who caused them.

Steinfurth's 1-year-old daughter, Elaina, was last seen June 2. That's when the girl's father went to the mother's residence to pick up his two daughters, but only Elaina's 4-year-old sister could be found.

Authorities, including the FBI, have searched homes, vacant buildings, and the Maumee River near downtown Toledo for any sign of Elaina. Volunteers have joined in the search, looking through neighborhoods and parks.

Steinfurth, 25, spoke with investigators on Wednesday, leading to a search of an area near where the girl was last seen, said police Capt. Wes Bombrys.

Investigators did not find Elaina, but her mother was taken into custody shortly after the search ended. Police also hauled away a van from the area.

A judge on Thursday set bond at $250,000 for Steinfurth, who's listed in jail records as Angela Mories. She appeared in court with a public defender who didn't comment on the charges.

Her stepfather, Richard Schiewe, told media outlets after the court appearance that he fears the little girl is dead.
