Michigan foes to launch campaign against energy issue

DETROIT (AP) — Opponents of a ballot measure requiring that electricity suppliers get more of their power from renewable sources are launching a statewide campaign against it.

The Clean Affordable Renewable Energy for Michigan Coalition, also known as CARE, plans to hold a news conference Monday in Detroit with former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Conrad Mallett and business and labor officials.

CARE says the requirement doesn't belong in the state constitution.

The Michigan Energy Michigan Jobs coalition disagrees. It says requiring electricity suppliers to obtain 25 percent of their power from wind, solar, biomass or hydropower by 2025 would create jobs and draw investment to Michigan.

Energy providers now must get 10 percent of their energy from renewables by 2015.

CARE plans news conferences later in the week in several other cities.
