Michigan bill would strip driver’s license from truant kids

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Legislation in Lansing would take away driver’s licenses from students
repeatedly absent from school.DemocraticRep. Andy Schor of Lansing introduced the bill last week to combat
theproblem of truancy. He says driving is a privilege and there’s no biggerincentive for most teens than
being able to drive.Thelegislation would compel judges to notify the secretary of state ofcases of truancy.
The secretary of state would have to suspend thelicense of a juvenile found by a circuit court to be
willfully andrepeatedly absent from schools for six months.In cases where a juvenile hasn’t yet been issued
a license, he or she would be denied a license.Michigan law requires students to be in school until age
