GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana man and his teenage
son are preparing to embark on an ambitious attempt to fly around the
world in a single-engine plane.
Babar Suleman and his 17-year-old
son, Haris, plan to disembark on June 20, depending on the weather and
make a dozen stops in their monthlong around-the-world journey.
If the Plainfield father and son succeed, Haris will become the youngest co-pilot to make an
around-the-world trip.
"I
am really looking forward to getting going. I only just got my license
but I can’t imagine a better way to spend my summer," the junior at
Plainfield High School said in a news release.
The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/1rRrbxk ) that they’re making the
journey to raise awareness and money for The
Citizen’s Foundation, a nonprofit that helps build schools in rural
Pakistan.
During their trek, the Sulemans will make stops in
Canada, Iceland, England, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Australia,
Fiji, American Samoa, Hawaii and California.
The Sulemans will be toasted during an International Festival on Saturday at the Greenwood Municipal
Airport.
Babar Suleman is an engineer and consultant who helps manage nuclear power plants. He’s been flying
private planes for years.
Haris, who was only eight when he started flying with his father, is the trip’s captain.
"He will be the pilot in command. I will only take over the controls in an emergency
situation," Babar Suleman said.
"If all goes well, my son will be going back to school for his senior year with some tall tales to
tell."
