AVON LAKE, Ohio (AP) — Officials have asked thousands of
northeast Ohio residents to limit their water usage amid a shortage
after ice blocked intake valves pulling water from Lake Erie, which
became more frozen in below-zero temperatures this week.

reports the shortage Wednesday affected more than 206,000 residential
and commercial customers whose water is provided through the Avon Lake
Regional Water plant. The affected customers were in several counties,
primarily Lorain and Medina counties.
Local officials asked
industrial customers to curtail operations that use water and said
residents should use water only for certain purposes, such as drinking
and cooking. A message sent out by Avon’s mayor pleaded for people also
to refrain from doing laundry or taking showers and to try to flush
toilets less frequently than usual.
