COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A permanent supportive housing
community for disabled and formerly homeless veterans in central Ohio
has expanded, with a similar facility expected to open next year in
northwest Ohio.
Federal, state and local officials are helping
celebrate the grand opening of the expanded Commons at Livingston
community in Columbus on Wednesday. The community created and operated
by the nonprofit National Church Residences opened in 2011 with 50
one-bedroom apartments. The $7.2 million expansion project includes 50
additional units.
The community provides veterans with on-site
social, educational, vocational and health care support services that
allow more opportunity for stability and self-sufficiency.
The
facility is financed through federal, state and local funding and
donations. All veterans in the housing community are disabled. They pay
some rent and must meet certain income requirements.
