House votes to legalize industrial hemp research

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan House has overwhelmingly passed legislation to allow industrial hemp
research.
Two
bills passed Thursday would allow the state agriculture department, a
college or a university to grow industrial hemp for agricultural or
academic research. Hemp being grown for research purposes would be
excluded from marijuana laws in the Public Health Code.
The
changes come in response to the new federal farm bill, which allows
agriculture departments to designate hemp research projects in states
that allow hemp growing.
Industrial hemp is in the same species as
marijuana but has a negligible amount of marijuana’s active ingredient.
It can be used in the production of plastics, fuel, textiles and food.
