COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A prosecutor will determine if a
former central Ohio county fair treasurer will face theft charges for
"borrowing" $211,000 in public money to help run his farm.
A
financial audit Tuesday from state Auditor Dave Yost says former
Franklin County Agricultural Society Treasurer Dave Brobst stole the
money between 2010 and 2012.
Brobst, a 54-year-old farmer who
lives in the Columbus suburb of Groveport, repaid the funds with
multiple installments, Yost said, making the final repayment on March 3.
Brobst’s
attorney said he took the money in "a moment of weakness" because of a
cash-flow problem at his family’s farm and always intended to pay it
back.
Brobst resigned from the post in December 2012 and told an official that an audit would uncover the
irregularities.
