CLEVELAND (AP) — The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio says it filed more than 120 illegal firearms indictments in the first half of 2013.
U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach in a statement on Tuesday said the office is on pace to file more firearms cases than ever before.
Most of the 124 indictments filed through June in the district came from its Cleveland division with 53 cases, followed by Youngstown, Toledo and Akron.
The attorney's office says that during the first six months of the year more than 70 defendants were sentenced for firearms crimes and the average sentence was nearly six years in prison.
The highest number of indictments in the last decade was reached in 2005 when the office filed 220.
