Discrimination suit can proceed against Ohio State

CINCINNATI (AP) — An appeals court says a doctoral program
applicant can proceed with her lawsuit alleging Ohio State University
discriminated against her because of a chronic disease.
The 6th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday that a lower court wrongly
dismissed the suit. The appeals court sent the case back to that court
for trial.
A magistrate earlier found Caitlin Sjostrand lacked
sufficient evidence for a jury to find the school rejected her
application to a psychology program because of Crohn’s disease. That’s a
chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal condition.
Sjostrand
alleges that interviews with professors in the doctoral program focused
mostly on her ailment. She says Ohio State violated her rights under the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
The university is represented by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, which declined to comment.
