Detroit rejects golf course-cemetery conversion

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit officials have rejected a proposal to
turn a church-owned golf course into a cemetery, which would have been
the city’s first in decades.
The Detroit News reports (http://bit.ly/1ellq2N
) Wednesday that building officials rejected the plan by Detroit
Memorial Park Association to buy the 120-acre, 18-hole Rogell Golf
Course from Greater Grace Temple. The church bought the course in 2007
from the city but closed it last year, saying the operation had never
been profitable.
Building officials denied the request because
they said converting recreational property wouldn’t be in the city’s
best interests. They also cited concerns about diminishing property
values and traffic in the area.
A cemetery official said he will appeal the decision.
