Cleveland zoo reports record 1-day attendance

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo says its
one-day attendance record was broken thanks to a charitable foundation
that provided free admission for visitors.
Zoo officials say more
than 35,000 people visited the zoo Saturday. That topped the previous
one-day attendance of more than 24,000 set in 2011 by nearly 11,000. The
(Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports that by noon, all of the zoo’s parking
lots were jammed and Cleveland police and Cleveland Metroparks rangers
directed traffic on surrounding roads most of the day.
The
Cleveland Foundation made the zoo admission-free for the day as a gift
to the community in celebration of the charitable foundation’s creation
100 years ago.
The foundation established in 1914 is one of the
largest community foundations, with assets of $2 billion and 2013 grants
of $89 million.
