CINCINNATI (AP) — University students and others looking for safer housing in Cincinnati will soon be able to get a list of apartments or homes that have passed voluntary fire inspections.

The voluntary plan allows landlords to call the Cincinnati fire department for a free inspection. Apartments and homes passing the inspection will be placed on a list maintained by the city that will be available for anyone looking for housing, The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/13lpyww) reports.

City Councilwoman Laure Quinlivan came up with the idea after a fire killed University of Cincinnati students Chad Kohls and Ellen Garner on Jan. 1. She says the two students' families and friends pushed for creation of a safe housing list.

The list isn't available yet, but the first inspections began this past week.

Quinlivan says the list is intended as an incentive for landlords, and Cincinnati Fire Chief Richard Braun says it provides an opportunity to improve safety for students and other Cincinnati residents.

"As a business decision, it makes sense for us to put ourselves forward as a good, safe option," said Johnna Mullikin, vice president of property management with Uptown Rental Properties. "It's what people are looking for."

Student Jaclyn Hyde says the fire that killed Kohls and Garner changed what students and their parents want in housing and safety is paramount.

UC has at least 4,000 students living in off-campus housing, according to university officials. The university plans to provide UC students and parents the link to the Cincinnati Safe Student Housing list.

Ellen Garner's mother, Ann Garner, said she never wanted her daughter's legacy to be fire safety.

"Unfortunately this is where God chose for her to make her mark," she said.
