Authorities say four dead in SW Ohio house fire

KETTERING, Ohio (AP) — An intense early morning house firekilled four people inside a suburban
southwest Ohio home Thursday,authorities said.The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office saidinvestigators at
the scene believe there were seven people in the housein the Dayton suburb of Kettering. Three people
escaped, one withinjuries. No other details on them were released immediately.Theupper part of the home
collapsed into the basement, fire marshal’sspokesman Michael Duchesne said. Two neighboring homes also
weredamaged.Neighbors said a family of seven — four children, twoparents and a grandparent — lived in
the home, The Dayton Daily Newsreported. Kari Basson of the Kettering City School District said
policehad notified the district that some of its students were involved.District crisis management teams
planned to address the situation in theaffected schools, she said.Neighbors called 911 at around 3:50
a.m. to report the fire."Theneighbor looked out and saw the flames from the house. At that time
thehouse was fully engulfed," Kettering Police Lt. Craig Moore said.Emergencyresponders were
hindered by intense heat, and firefighters couldn’t getinside the house, Moore said. They also spotted a
man outside the homebut couldn’t reach him right away, he said. The man died at the scene.A police
officer and a firefighter were treated for fire-related injuries.Investigators were trying to determine
what started the blaze."It’s still real early in the investigation," Duchesne said.Copyright
