ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Organizers in a southeastern Ohio city say they plan to rewrite their proposal that seeks to ban the high-pressure oil and gas drilling technique of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking
The Athens County Board of Elections recently rejected the ballot initiative without elaborating. The proposal's supporters tell The Athens Messenger (http://bit.ly/19odnPC) they will make changes and try again for next year's ballot.
A spokesman for the group behind the proposal says supporters have requested public documents related to the ballot initiative from the elections board.
The proposal would have banned such drilling and related waste-disposal work in Athens, which is home to Ohio University.
Similar bans are slated to be on fall ballots in Youngstown and in Bowling Green after protests against those initiatives were unsuccessful or were withdrawn.
