CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A 9-year-old northeastern Ohio boy was looking at a gun with his teenage cousin when the firearm went off and killed him in an apparent accident.
Stark County Sheriff George Maier says 9-year-old Matthew Schreckengaust of Canton was visiting family when he and his 14-year-old cousin began examining the gun Friday evening. They didn't know it was loaded.
Maier says the gun went off in what appears to be an accidental discharge, and Matthew was killed.
The gun belonged to the older boy's father, but Maier says it's unclear yet whether the gun had been locked up.
He says deputies are still investigating the shooting and considering charges.
Maier tells the Canton Repository (http://bit.ly/11xhLZD) that Matthew's death is "a tragedy for the family and a tragedy for the community."
