Sister Helen Foos (aka Sister M. Aloysius), member of the Ursuline Community for 71 years died at Ursuline Center on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.
Sister Helen was born in Bowling Green, Ohio to Clara and Clarence Foos on April 17. 1921. She entered the Ursuline Convent in 1941. She began her career in teaching at St. Francis de Sales in Toledo and continued to teach in the diocese at St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Agnes, Rosary Cathedral and St. John the Baptist in Toledo. She also taught at St. Mary's in Tiffin, St. Gerard in Lima and Nazareth Hall in Grand Rapids, Ohio.
Sister served as a diocesan supervisor for two years and was principal of St. Angela Hall for three years.
Her education included BA and BSE degrees from Mary Manse College and an MA degree from Notre Dame University. She did advanced study at the University of Toledo, Central Michigan University, Miami University and Mary Mount College, Milwaukee.
She was awarded Outstanding Educator awards from Rosary Cathedral School and also from St. Gerard's school. Sister served as the president of the Toledo International Reading Association in 1968-69.
In 1991 Sister Helen was a teacher's aide at OLPH School and was engaged in craft work, especially quilting which she exhibited and sold at various craft shows in the area. She retired from teaching in 1999 was appointed the coordinator of St. Ursula Academy Convent and continued craft work full time. Besides the quilting, she knitted caps for newborns and made prayer blankets for the patients in hospitals, at home, in hospice care and at other nursing homes. While still pursuing her craft work, Sister Helen retired to the Ursuline Center in 2005.
Sister leaves to cherish her memory her sisters Hilda Durliat, Margaret Feltes, Mary Louise Reimer, Donna Jean Bochnek, Jane Horner and brothers, Raymond, James, and Thomas Foos, many nieces and nephews and her Ursuline Sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Clara Foos, and her brother, Howard Foos and sister, Marie Fleitz.
The visitation will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at The Coyle Funeral Home 1770 South Reynolds Road from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. and before the funeral liturgy at Little Flower Church from 9;30 - 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013. The Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Coyle Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Little flower Church 5522 Dorr Street, Toledo at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow the funeral at Resurrection Cemetery.
