Robert Herringshaw, 95, passed away at Wood County Hospital on September 17, 2013. Robert was a lifelong farmer in Liberty Township.
He was born January 26, 1918 to Edward and Anna (Hansen) Herringshaw. He graduated from Liberty Township School where he met his wife, Thelma Grace Angel. They were married January 3, 1941 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage before she passed in June 2011.
Robert was a passionate reader and enjoyed keeping up with current events and politics. In 1967 he became the first person from the Liberty/Milton area to be elected to the Bowling Green School Board. He served 12 years, the last years as President before retiring in 1979. He represented the Bowling Green School District on the Penta Vocational School Board.
In 1980 he was appointed to serve a term on the Wood County Mental Clinic Board.
He was a past member of Bowling Green Town and Gown where he enjoyed the challenging discussions and information presented by the members. In 1992 he was awarded the Spirit of Wood County Award for Outstanding Public Service in Agricultural Leadership.
He was a long-term member of Kiwanis and when he resigned in 2010 was made an honorary member.
As a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Portage, he served on many committees through the years. He was a Falcon Club member and enjoyed attending the BGSU women's basketball games.
Robert enjoyed woodworking and made all of his children clocks. He would make cabinets and other small items as well. His eyesight forced him to give up the hobby.
He continued to maintain a garden every year and he enjoyed sharing his bounty with others.
In addition to his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his sisters Doris Herringshaw, Frieda Herringshaw, Eunice O'Hearn and Helen Baumgardner.
He is survived by his children Kathleen (Edward) Hall, Coopers Plain, NY, Edward (Sherry), Baton Rouge, LA, Paul (Doris), Bowling Green, Michael (Doris) Collierville, TN and Beth Ann Rife, Perrysburg, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family will receive family and friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2013 at DUNN FUNERAL HOME, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at, 408 West Wooster Street. Visitation will continue on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Portage (301 W. Main St. Portage, Ohio) where funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Rev Bruce McDaniel will officiate.
Interment will follow at Wingston Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Christ United Methodist Church, Portage, or Bowling Green Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation.
