R. Elaine Green, 69, of Venice, Fla. and a long-time former resident of Bowling Green, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at Venice House Hospice from complications of lung cancer.
Her closest family members were with her until the end, and in a manner typical of Elaine, she maintained a sense of humor in an effort to lighten their distress.
She died as gracefully as possible under such circumstances. A class act all the way!
Elaine was born September 10, 1943 to Alvin and Ruth (Painter) Eckman in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in elementary education and subsequently taught in the public schools for a number of years.
She married Fred Green, the love and friend of her life, in 1966 and he survives in Venice, Fla.
Before she and Fred moved from Bowling Green to Texas and subsequently to Florida, she was the friendly face of the Little Shop at BGSU as well as a helpful presence at the University Book Store.
She and Fred owned and operated Casey's Original Hamburgers on North Main Street for 17 years. In addition, Elaine was a committed leader and devotee of the Bowling Green Skating Club at the University Ice Arena.
She avidly followed the skating development of her own daughter, and eventually that of her granddaughter Briley.
One of the great joys of the last few weeks of her life was learning of Briley's recent success in international skating competition.
In addition to her husband, Elaine is survived by her daughter, Laura (Michael) Pizzelanti of Pompano Beach, Fla.; her son Ryan (Rory) Green of Cincinnati, Ohio; as well as her granddaughter, Briley Pizzelanti and several nieces and nephews.
She also leaves behind two of the many cats she has loved and cared for over the years. Gus and Sophie will surely miss her attention as will, perhaps, the Sandhill crane family that regularly visited her yard in Florida and whose presence cheered her always, but especially in recent months.
Elaine was preceded death by her parents and her sister, Pat.
There will be private memorial service at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Elaine's name may be made to Tidewell Hospice House, 210 Wexford Boulevard, Venice, Fla. 34293.
