Patty Messenger, 80, of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, from complications of
Alzheimer’s disease.
Patty was born on October 23, 1933 in Greentown, Indiana to Roy McAninch and Meredith (Lee) McAninch. She
married Vincent Messenger on May 14, 1951, and he preceded her in death on April 17, 1994.
Patty is survived by her mother Meredith, Bowling Green; brother Keith (Mary) McAninch, of Burlington,
IN; and her children: daughter Cynthia, Bowling Green, and sons Michael (Liz) of Perrysburg, Steven
(Jill), Timothy, Jeffrey (Nancy) and Todd, all of Bowling Green. She leaves 11 grandchildren: Mallory,
Stephanie, Camille (Mike), Alex, Andy (Steve), Allyson, Kari, Anna, and Natalie (Jeff), Nick and Thomas
(Todd); and four great-grandchildren: Reagan, Miles, Emerson (Allyson), and Brayden (Kari).
She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia (Larry) Rosselot, and father, Roy.
After growing up in Greentown, IN, and Fenton, MI, Patty moved to Bowling Green in 1960, and raised an
active family of six. Many evenings and weekends were spent at the Bowling Green Pee Wee Park and the
BGSU Ice Arena. She attended hundreds of little league, fast pitch and youth hockey events. She was
active in both organizations as her children grew. She was involved in the early formation of the Bobcat
Hockey Blueliner organization, and served as president of the Bowling Green Youth Hockey Association
from 1977 to 1979.
Patty led an active lifestyle with a variety of interests and hobbies. She was a member of the BGCC
Golferettes, as well as bridge club. With a lifelong interest in antiquing, she enjoyed collecting
glassware made in the areas of her youth, especially Greentown and Fenton glassware.
As her kids grew more independent she worked with the late JoAnne Gillespie at Jack and Jill Nursery
School and later became employed by the Bowling Green City Schools as a secretary, working most of those
years for the school psychologists. She retired in 2003 after more than 20 years of employment with the
school district.
After retirement, she spent time watching her grandchildren grow and attended as many hockey, softball,
baseball, volleyball and tennis events as she could fit into her schedule, often traveling with Grandma
Mac and Cindy. She could often be found at Concerts in the Park, as well as at the Depue Family Band
concerts.
Her family is left with many fond memories of summer vacations in Holland, Michigan, and filling the
house with as many Messengers as would fit for the Sunday evening family dinners.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 beginning at 10 a.m. at the DUNN
