Norman A. Mooney, 82, of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio on January 15, 2014. He spent his last hours with those most cherished by him.
He was born May 27, 1931 to Douglas and Agnes (Scharf) Mooney in Portage, Ohio. He married Mary Jane Eckel on August 10, 1957 at St. Aloysius Church in Bowling Green and she survives.
Norm proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. While in the service he was privileged to witness the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in London. He also played football for the Army as a guard.
Norm attended Miami University and The University of Cincinnati playing football for both. He proudly played in the "Sun Bowl" in El Paso, Texas while attending The University of Cincinnati.
In 1952 he was drafted as 4th pick for the New York Giants in a guard position. Later, playing professionally for K.W. Dutchman team of Kitchener Ontario, Canada.
Norm worked as a steel fitter for Surface Combustion and Glass Tec, both in Toledo, Ohio. He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion and a life member of VFW post 1148 B90.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Doug and Agnes; sisters, Mary Jane (infant sister) and June Bechstein (Mooney); and sister-in-law Peggy Mooney.
Along with his wife Jane, Norm is survived by his son Norm Jr. (Zeke) and daughter Jodi (Craig) Roe, two very loved grandchildren Kohl and Morgan Roe, two brothers Doug "Gene" (Lee) Mooney of Strongsville, Ohio and Tom Mooney of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, brother-in-law Ray Bechstein and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by life long friends - DUNN FUNERAL HOME located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 W. Wooster Street.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home.
Burial will take place Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose Cemetery in Perrysburg, Ohio. Father Thomas Leyland will officiate. The Wood County Honor Detail will be conducting full military honors.
Following the burial there will be a gathering at Norm and Jane's home.
Memorial contributions in Norm's memory may be given to Hospice of NWO or St. Aloysius restoration fund.
