Martha J. Gilliland, age 88, of Wayne, Ohio, passed away Wednesday (June 19, 2013) at Wood Haven Health Care in Bowling Green.
She was born on November 21, 1924 in Wayne, Ohio, to the late Harry D. and Jessie Mae (Ostrander) Hedge. Martha married Richard E. Gilliland on June 24, 1944 in Wayne; he passed away on September 21, 2006.
Surviving are Sons, Franklin D. Gilliland of Wayne, Ohio, Jerry A. (Tina) Gilliland of Noblesville, Indiana; Daughter, Patricia J. Miller of Toledo, Ohio; Sister, Madge Marie Cobb of Risingsun, Ohio; 8 Grandchildren & 13 Great-Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Jessie; Husband, Richard; Son, Donald L. Gilliland; Sister, Elene M. Pollard.
Martha attended Bowling Green State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She then taught first grade at Wayne Elementary for 32 years.
Martha was a member of the Wayne United Methodist Church, member of Eastern Star for over 30 years, member of the Albert Bowe American Legion Auxiliary, member of the Garden Club, and on the Wayne Public Library Board. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters, and she was very active in the Lake Region Retirement Village in Haines City, Florida, for many years.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (June 21, 2013) at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday (June 22, 2013) at the Wayne United Methodist Church, where a Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11 a.m., with Pastor Mark Kuhlman officiating. Burial will be in Graham Cemetery, with a luncheon immediately following back at the Wayne United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne Public Library, American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or the American Leukemia Foundation.
