McPherson-Obit-PhotoJoanne "Jo" McPherson, age 73, of Perrysburg, OH, passed away on Wednesday, August 8 , 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Unit.
She was born on June 8, 1939 in Hicksville, OH to LeRoy and Frances (Olson) Monroe. On June 6, 1959 she married Jack McPherson in Bowling Green, OH and they enjoyed 53 wonderful years together.
Joanne graduated from Bowling Green High School, Class of 1957 and attended BGSU earning a BS in Education in 1961 and later her Master's degree from BGSU in 1985.
Joanne began a teaching career as a substitute teacher until her youngest son, Joel, was three and could accompany her to pre-school at Kids World (formerly known as the Learning Tree). She taught there from 1971-1978 and in the fall of 1977 she began teaching Kindergarten at Toth Elementary. Upon Woodland's completion in the spring of 1978, Joanne taught first grade for 22 years and also taught Safety Town for 20 years. She retired from Perrysburg Schools in 2000 and then enjoyed eight years at her "retirement job" at Nanna's Bookstore.
Joanne was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dowling, OH, where she was a member of the Educational Committee and taught Sunday school. Joanne was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa for a number of years.
Joanne and Jack were blessed with four wonderful sons: Jeff (Terri) and Jay (Katy), both of Perrysburg, Jon (Kris) of Galesburg, MI and Joel (Becky) of Dublin, OH. She always felt that her daughters-in-law were her own kids. She was also the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren: Katy (Eric) of New York, NY, Kimberly of Perrysburg, Annie of Toledo, Ryan of Perrysburg, Kevin, Kyle and Michael of Galesburg, MI and Andrew and Grace of Dublin, OH as well as a great-granddaughter: Brooklynn of Perrysburg, brother: David (Barbara) Monroe of Southaven, MS, sisters-in-law: Janet (Larry) Shaffer of Cygnet, OH, Jane McPherson of Bowling Green, OH and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister: Judith and sister: Karen (Monroe) Reynolds.
Joanne enjoyed taking care of her family and enjoyed family activities, traveling, especially going on cruises with Jack. She also enjoyed cheering for her Ohio State Buckeyes, as she was one of the team's biggest fans. She was grateful for her large family and for the many close friends who made her life complete.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, August 12, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Marsh Funeral Home, 110 Main Street, Luckey, OH. Memorial services will be conducted at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dowling, OH on Monday, August 13, 2012 at 11 a.m. with additional visitation from 10 a.m. until time of services. Officiating will be Pastor Tom Zulick. There will be a bereavement luncheon served at the church immediately following the memorial services.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Tom, the caring staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, University of Michigan Medical Center and all the specialists involved in the care given to Joanne.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to: Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church - Building Fund or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
