James-Richard-obitJames R. "Ora" Richard, age 81, of Bradner, Ohio passed away on Friday (June 8, 2012) at his residence. He was born on January 10, 1931 in Towanda, Illinois to the late Ora and Wilma (Jackman) Richard. He married Ruth Tallman on May 27, 1951 and they were divorced. On August 14, 1976 he married Versa A. Cotterman and she survives.
Also surviving are sons, Mark Richard, Hamler, Ohio, Jerry (Tobin) Richard, Defiance, Ohio, Timothy (Martha) Patterson, Bradner, Ohio; daughters, Sharon (Jim) Adams, Bowling Green, Ohio, Roberta Starkey, Bowling Green, Ohio, Melissa (Mark) Meyer, Westminster, Maryland, Pamela Lynn, Bradner, Ohio, Mary Donald, Bowling Green, Ohio; 24 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; brothers, Dan (Carolyn) New Bavaria, Ohio, Billy (Betty) Richard, Napoleon, Ohio, Paul (Phyllis) Richard, New Hampshire and sister, Janice (Jack) Price, Turkey Lake, Indiana. He was preceded in death by parents; daughter, Amy Christine Patterson; brothers, Larry Richard, Ron Richard and sister, Betty McKibben.
As a teenager Jim worked at a mushroom plant, a tomato factory and he was a Caddy Master at Kettering Golf Course. He also was a pin setter at local bowling alleys. Jim was a 1940 Graduate of Defiance High School and went on to study at Defiance College for one year. Jim was in the Army serving in the Korean War from October 1951 - 1953. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was confirmed on October 4, 1944. He managed the A&P Store in Defiance for 13 years. He later retired from Johns Manville in 1994 where he was in Quality Control, Foreman, Supervisor and the Office of Planning and Scheduling for 32 years. He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club at Johns Manville. Jim was a member of the J.C.'s in Celina where he was the Secretary. He was a life member of VFW, Eagles and the American Legion Post 117 in Defiance County where he was a Commander. He later transferred to Post 338 in Bradner, Ohio. He was also a member of the Honor Guard holding the posts of Sergeant of Arms and Adjucant. He was involved with Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts. Jim was a member of the Timeless Treasures Senior Citizens Group in Bradner, Ohio. He enjoyed bowling and was on several bowling leagues in Defiance and Bowling Green. Jim also enjoyed playing softball as he played on teams for Diehl's Beer, Anoly's Café and Crescent News. He loved spending time tending to his yard.
Friends will be received from 3-8 PM on Monday (June 11, 2012) and 10-11 AM Tuesday (June 12, 2012) at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11:00 AM with Reverend Melanie Haack officiating. Burial will be in Bradner Cemetery with a bereavement luncheon to follow at the American Legion Post 338 in Bradner, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice or the American Legion Post 338 in Bradner. On-line condolences may be sent to Jim's family at www.barndtfuneralhome.org.
