JamesD_ONeil-obitOn Friday, July 27, 2012, James D. O'Neil passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio.
He was born November 11, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, to Dennis J. O'Neil and Elizabeth (Fox) O'Neil. He attended St. Charles High School in Columbus and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1952. Following graduation, he served as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
He married Mary I. Clark on September 11, 1954 in Delphos, Ohio.
He was a Professional Civil Engineer with a long, successful career not only with the state, but also with Leon Bolton & Sons, Harmeyer Construction, Briggs Construction Company, N-Viro Corporation, and private consulting.
His work brought him to Northwest Ohio as the lead engineer on the construction of I-75 in Toledo in 1967. He was a master tinkerer and held numerous patents for construction industry related inventions.
He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Mary, of Dunbridge, OH; sister, Peggy O'Neil, Bowling Green, OH; sons Dennis (Sonny) O'Neil, Loganville, GA; James (Adria) O'Neil, Wadsworth, OH; Robert (Tamra) O'Neil, Gibsonburg, OH; Joseph (Katie) O'Neil, Perrysburg, OH; and daughters Julia (Christopher) Haley, Findlay, OH; Ellen (Larry) Hatcher, Saginaw, MI; Peggy (Rick) Swain, Gibsonburg, OH; Sarah (Jack) Dias, Toledo, OH; 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by daughter Mary (Steven) Miller, Bowling Green, OH; and sisters Julia Brown, Elizabeth Case, and Mary O'Neil.
Memorial mass will be Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed John XXIII in Perrysburg. The family is receiving visitors at the church at 9:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to Blessed John XXIII Youth Ministries.
