Peslikis-obit
Helen Peslikis drew her last breath on the morning of July 27 in Bowling Green at the age of 96.
The daughter of Costas and Maria Magalios, immigrants from Kastoria in Greek Macedonia, she was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Irene Peslikis; her brothers, Will, George and Nicholas; and sisters, Fay, Lee, and Mary.
Hers was a family on the move with some of her siblings born in Greece, some in Canada and some, like Helen, born in the United States. Helen's abrupt delivery into this world occurred on July 15, 1917 while her mother was sunbathing on a tenement rooftop at 732 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan. A colorful life followed during which she married John Peslikis in 1935, and gave birth to her son, Michael in 1936 and daughter, Irene in 1943.
She lived in New York's Queens borough with her family until retiring with her husband to Hallandale, Florida in 1967.
Along the way she held various jobs including work as a retail cosmetologist at Macys, and more notably as a hostess at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel where she welcomed among others Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt and Elizabeth Taylor.
When her husband died in 1997, she moved to Bowling Green to be near her son, daughter-in-law, Cindy and grandson, Jason. She immediately fell in love with her adopted city establishing her independence, and for the first time in her life at the age of 81 living on her own in her own apartment. She was often heard repeating the mantra, "I love Bowling Green.
She savored every day in her new surroundings, cooking, baking, and hosting coffee klatches for her friends and neighbors. She loved dancing, music and enjoyed the thrill of gambling games like poker, slot machines, Bingo and the Ohio Lottery.
A memorial service will be planned for some time in September.
