Guadalupe R. "Lupe" Cortez, Sr, age 83, of Hoytville, OH died at 3:05 a.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010, at Wood County Hospital.
He was born on October 29, 1926, in Waltrip, TX to the late Juan and Maria (Reza) Cortez. On November 16, 1946, he married Delores Cabrera in North Baltimore and she survives. Lupe is also survived by eight children: Rey (Teresa) Cortez of Hoytville, Rick (Terrie) Cortez of Hoytville, Roberto (Dee) Cortez of Hoytville, Maria (Pg) Lavengood of Loudonville, OH, Eva (Russ) Teegardin, Gloria (George) Brink, Jr., Linda (Mickey) Mull, Patricia (Tim) Leader, all of Hoytville; two sisters Leonor Chapa of Bluffton, OH, Feliz (Daniel, Sr.) Bernal of Fostoria; two daughters-in-law Linda Cortez and Tina Cortez; twenty-three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two sons: Lupe Cortez, Jr., David Cortez, six brothers: Juan, Pedro, Procopio, Luis, Antonio and Jesus Cortez and one sister Maria M. Cortez.
Lupe worked for over 50 years at Smith's Foundry in North Baltimore where he was responsible for founding the UAW Union.
He was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, North Baltimore.
Visitation to celebrate his life will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Fr. Jeff Nordhaus officiating.
Burial will follow in New Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the family c/o Smith-Crates Funeral Home.
