PAUL DAVID RUNNING
Dr. Paul D. Running, 89, formerly of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away January 20, 2013 at Borgess Gardens in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
He was born on March 22, 1923, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the fifth son of a Lutheran pastor, Alfred S. Running, and his musician wife, Julia Sophia Olson. His family moved to Minnesota in 1925, where he attended public school in the small town of Zumbrota, from 1929 to 1940.
Before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, he attended St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minnesota for two years. As an Aviation Cadet, he received technical training at Carleton College and Tale University, leading to his commission as a Communications Officer in 1944, serving in that capacity until 1946 in Texas and the Central Pacific.
Following his separation from the service, he studied at the University of Iowa's School of Art, where he received the M.F.A. degree in painting in 1948 and the Ph.D. degree in Art History in 1951. Dr. Running taught painting, drawing, and art history courses at universities and colleges in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and North Carolina before coming to Bowling Green State University's School of Art in 1956. At BGSU, he was responsible for the establishment of two graduate programs in art, the M.A. and the M.F.A., which he directed until 1979. In summer periods during the 1950s and 1960s, Dr. Running developed and conducted eight art programs in Europe, first for commercial travel companies and later for the BGSU School of Art. Since that time, he and members of his family have continued to travel and paint frequently in Europe, Canada, and the United States.
Paul married Georgia Lee Gendron, also a painter, from Brainerd, Minnesota, in 1943. She died on January 21, 2011, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she and Paul had moved in 2006. They have two children: Cynthia Running-Johnson (John Running-Johnson), a teacher of French at Western Michigan University, and Christopher Running (Kay Running), a painter. Cynthia lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Chris in Portage, Michigan. Two grandchildren, Kristoffer Running (Andrea Malek) and Eli Olsson (Gley Olsson), live in Chicago and Boston. Grandchildren Adam and Ashley live in Portage, Michigan and Erik is in the Air Force in Mississippi. Paul's older brothers also became artists: two painters and two musicians. Three are now deceased. Brother Joseph Running lives in Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Running has been a working and exhibiting painter since 1946, appearing in over 160 area and national shows. Close to 600 of his paintings are included in personal and institutional collections throughout the United States and in seven foreign countries. He is remembered locally for designing three walls of stained glass, and several smaller panels, in St. Mark's Lutheran Church sanctuary built in 1964, as well as another wall of stained glass in the addition to the church in 2001. The pews and the liturgical furniture in the sanctuary were also designed by him.
A memorial service was held for Paul at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Wednesday, January 23rd at 3 p.m., Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. The funeral will take place at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bowling Green, Ohio, on Saturday, January 26th at 11 a.m., with Pastor Henry Seibert officiating. It will be preceded by a visitation at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's and followed by a luncheon.
