Former Wood County resident Dr. Harold C. "Hal" Urschel Jr., died November 12, 2012, at the age of 82.
Dr. Urschel was a noted thoracic surgeon who spent nearly 50 years at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. His most recent work included in-depth cancer research using stem cells to treat patients with heart failure.
He was born in Toledo and grew up in Bowling Green. He moved to Texas in 1963.
Over the course of his life, he excelled at every level.
As a high school student in Bowling Green, he became an all-state football player. Though recruited by several major college teams, because he was also an outstanding academic student, his mother helped influence his decision to accept a scholarship offered from Princeton University. His senior year football team was ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Following graduation, he went on to Harvard Medical School and trained in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
It was while there, he met a Wellesley College undergraduate, Elizabeth "Betsey" Bradley, who later became his wife. They had five children, who survive along with his widow.
His career in Dallas was distinguished on numerous levels. He died in Los Angeles, where he was attending the American Heart Association meeting to present a lecture on his latest research.
Memorial donations are requested to a scholarship fund for his youngest grandson: Liam Walters Scholarship Fund, 4609 Harrys Lane, Dallas, Texas 75229.
