Ann Janet Laskey (nee Carstensen) was born on May 14, 1925, the seventh of eight children in the family of Peter and Anna Carstensen. She grew up on the family farm near Bono , Ohio. Ann attended a one-room schoolhouse, was valedictorian of her class at Clay High School, and graduated from The Ohio State University with two bachelor's degrees. Ann had a very successful teaching career and was once nominated to be Ohio's Teacher of the Year. A generous volunteer, she served on the Grand Rapids Town Council, was the treasurer of the village's historical society, and helped to start the local library branch. Ann was married for 54 years to Carl Laskey, and she lived in Ohio for most of her life. She spent time in California during the Korean conflict, when Carl was in the U.S. Navy; she also lived in California for the final chapter of her life, to be near her daughter and family in San Diego. Ann suffered from dementia and died of its complications on August 13. She is survived by a sister, Jean Friend, of Frankenmuth; her daughter, Cathy Zumberge, of San Diego; and three grandchildren. Family and friends will be received on Friday, August 17, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wright-Habegger Funeral Home, 24084 W. Second St., Grand Rapids, OH, where funeral services will take place on Saturday, August 18, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Beaver Creek Cemetery, Grand Rapids, OH. Memorial donations can be directed to the San Diego Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. |
