Chapter 4"Fanny, why are you here?
You should be back in 1878!""You forgot your sweater," Fanny replied, sheepishly, holding
up Alyssa’s sweater. "Besides, I just want to spend more time with you and see what 2013 is
like."Alyssa was vexed. She knew her parents would be extremely worried and start looking for her
if she wasn’t home shortly after school, but President Hayes would send out the Secret Service to find
his missing daughter. Alyssa knew the girls were in trouble with a capital T."How do you
time-travel home without Edison’s talking doll? I don’t have one," Alyssa’s voice was thick with
anxiety.Fanny picked up Alyssa’s iPad, desperately trying to turn it on. Matter-of-factly, Alyssa hit
the on button and unlocked the screen. Fanny was delighted by this simple act and giddy while listening
to the theme music of the game Alyssa last played."Maybe we can use this," Fanny
suggested."An iPad isn’t going to work, Fanny. We need Steve Jobs, Einstein, or, better yet,
Edison," Alyssa retorted."Well, let’s go see him," Fanny said, as she flipped the light
switch on and off. Alyssa rolled her eyes. She knew they needed help from a living person, someone who
could help them right now in the present moment.Alyssa grabbed her phone out of her backpack and began
texting as fast as she could.Fanny stared at her in awe. "I’ve never seen someone’s thumbs move
that fast," she marveled.A part of Alyssa wanted to show Fanny how to text, but a much bigger part
just wanted to get Fanny home safe and sound.Fanny belonged in 1878, not in 2013. If she stayed here
much longer, Alyssa was worried that not only would President Hayes be mad, but also that Fanny’s future
might be changed, which meant her future would be changed too. Alyssa had seen enough time travel movies
to know Fanny must get back to her present as soon as possible.Alyssa got one last text, slid her
keyboard shut, and grabbed Fanny’s hand. Just as Alyssa was about to open the door, she remembered what
Fanny was wearing. "Here, you need to change," Alyssa said as she handed Fanny a pair of jeans
and a T-shirt.Once Fanny had changed, the girls tore through Alyssa’s house and out the back door. Fanny
could barely keep up with Alyssa’s sprint through her neighbors’ backyards. In seconds, Fanny, panting,
approached Alyssa who was knocked gently on the glass sliding door.First a black lab appeared on the
other side of the glass, and then Scott with his mouth wide open. Luckily, Scott had come home from
college for the weekend to make som0e extra money dog sitting.He slid the door open, stepped out, and
shut it quickly. Jack the dog pressed his nose against the glass and stared at them, panting. "You
were for real?" Scott asked, shaking his head at Fanny."Yes. I’m not crazy. I just have to get
Fanny home," Alyssa said, irritated with her brother.Scott continued to shake his head
bewildered.Just then an airplane flew over the house, casting a quick shadow on the three of them. Fanny
looked up as if she had just seen a living dinosaur. "That’s the biggest bird I’ve ever seen,"
she exclaimed.Alyssa and Scott couldn’t help but laugh a little. Fanny smiled, sat down in a patio
chair, and stared at the sky.Scott sat down, too, and started typing things into his iPhone. Alyssa
tried to recall all of Edison’s inventions Mr. Sherman had discussed in class that day. There had to
something they could use or make that would allow Fanny to travel back home.Lost in complete
concentration, they were silent until Fanny spoke, "Is that a phone? Can you hear people on the
other end?" She was staring at Scott’s iPhone."That’s it!" Alyssa yelled. "I’ve got

pero el presidente Hayes enviaría a los del Servicio Secreto a encontrar a su hija perdida. Alyssa sabía

a verlo,” dijo Fanny mientras ponía y apagaba las luces jugando con el interruptor. Alyssa puso los ojos
en blanco. Sabía que necesitbaban un ser viviente que pudiera ayudarles en ese momento. Alyssa sacó el
teléfono celular de su mochila y empezó a textear lo más rápido que podía.Fanny la miraba atónita.
“Nunca he visto pulgares moverse tan rápido.”Por un lado Alyssa quería enseñar a Fanny a textear, pero
por otro sólo quería ayudarle a regresar a casa sana y salva. Fanny debía estar en 1878, no en 2013. Si
se quedara mucho más Alyssa temía que el presidente Hayes se enfadara y que el futuro de Fanny pudiera
ser alterado, y eso también afectaría su futuro. Alyssa había visto bastantes películas sobre los viajes
a través del tiempo para saber que Fanny necesitaba volver a su tiempo cuanto antes.Alyssa recibió un
texto más, cerró el teclado y tomó la mano de Fanny. En el momento que Alyssa iba a abrir la puerta se
acordó de la ropa que Fanny llevaba puesta. “Toma, necesitas cambiarte,” dijo Alyssa al darle unos jeans

entonces llegó Scott con la boca abierta. Por suerte, Scott había vuelto a casa de la universidad con el
propósito de ganarse un poco de dinero cuidadando al perro.Scott echó la puerta al lado, salió de la
casa y cerró la puerta bruscamente. Jack el perro puso la nariz contra el vidrio y los miraba, jadeando.
“Así que no me jalaban el pelo?” preguntó Scott mientras negaba con la cabeza.“No, y tampoco estoy loca.
Sólo tengo que regresar a Fanny a casa,” dijo Alyssa que ya estaba más que molesta con su
hermano.Perplejo, Scott seguía negando con la cabeza.En ese momento un avión pasó sobre la casa, echando

oír a otras personas en el otro lado?” Fanny miraba el iPhone de Scott.“Eso es!” gritó Alyssa. “Tengo
