(Editor’s note: This is the third in a four-part series that will run through May 1. The intent is
for teachers to use it in the classrooms. The series includes a Spanish translation of the story as well as
in-class questions to ask students.)

Chapter 3Alyssa and Fanny somersaulted across
what felt to be a very hard floor. With her eyes still squeezed shut, Alyssa rubbed her forehead to fight
off a looming headache. She felt extremely dizzy and queasy, too, like she did when she had the flu a while
ago."Are you all right?" Fanny asked from across the room."Yeah. I know what Harry Potter
must feel like," Alyssa mumbled, opening her eyes and seeing a confused Fanny Hayes just a few feet
away from her.Alyssa must have looked confused, too, as she glanced around an ornately decorated room. She
noticed thick blue drapes, a small bed with a comforter and many decorative pillows. In a corner was a
dollhouse-sized replica of the White House.From her bedside table, Fanny poured Alyssa a glass of water and
brought it to her new friend. "Here, water will help your head. Isn’t this excellent, Alyssa? Mr.
Edison taught me how to time travel when he visited us a few weeks ago. Pretty fun, right?""I
didn’t know time travel was possible," Alyssa whispered into the glass. "What year is
it?"Fanny sat down next to Alyssa on the floor and explained that the year was 1878. Her father,
President Hayes, had been a major general in the Civil War before he was elected as Governor of Ohio several
years ago. The family lived in Fremont, Ohio until, this year, he won the presidency-controversially through
votes from the Electoral College, not from the popular vote. Fanny continued telling Alyssa that her family
hosted the first ever Easter Egg Roll on the White House’s South Lawn. "I know it will become an annual
tradition," Fanny exclaimed."Oh, it is. President Obama and his family just had the 134th annual
one. I kept begging my parents to go," Alyssa interjected."That’s why I chose to visit you,
Alyssa. We’re relatives and we both like history," Fanny nodded.Then, Fanny told Alyssa about the
telephone that Alexander Graham Bell had installed in the White House (Scott was right! Alyssa thought) and
the phonograph Thomas Edison gave them. Fanny concluded, "My father likes household
machines.""Too bad you’re dad isn’t living in 2013. There’s even more awesome technologies like
ebooks, robotic vacuums, and DVRs," responded Alyssa. Fanny wrinkled her brow, trying to comprehend
Alyssa’s foreign language.The girls peered out of the second-floor window, over the South Lawn, where the
Easter Egg Roll was traditionally held. Alyssa saw lush trees, unpaved roads, and what appeared to be the
smoke of a train far on the horizon. There were no cars, no stoplights, and no malls to be seen. Amazed by
the horses tied to a post and the dirt roads, Alyssa finished the cup of water Fanny gave her in one gulp.
So this is what history looks like, she thought."I’ll get some of my mother’s famous lemonade. You stay
here. Those garments will cause suspicion."Alyssa looked down at her plain jeans and striped T-shirt,
and then gazed up at Fanny’s lavish dress with a slim skirt and an enormous train. Alyssa wondered how
anyone could play outside in a dress like that.Fanny gracefully glided out the door, which she left slightly
ajar. Alyssa could hear people talking loudly. No doubt one of the voices had to be President Hayes. Peeking
around the door while holding onto its knob, she saw a familiar object sitting on a table in the hallway:
Thomas Edison’s phonograph. Suddenly, Alyssa was overcome by homesickness. She didn’t need lemonade. She
needed her family.Just then Fanny came up the stairs."Listen, Fanny, I really have to get home. It’s
really cool here, but my parents are going to worry. Can you please help me?"Fanny set down the
lemonades and frowned. "I had hoped you would stay longer. But I understand." Fanny walked over to
a large doll sitting in the corner."This is a talking doll Thomas Edison made for me. I’ll wind up the
phonograph in her back. When she begins talking, you squeeze her and say the year and place you want to go,
and then the room will spin. That means it’s working. Understand?"Alyssa nodded, bringing her hand
close to the doll’s tiny porcelain one.Fanny cranked the lever on the phonograph inside the back of the
doll. When the doll started talking, Alyssa gripped its hand, followed Fanny’s directions, squeezed her eyes
shut, and readied her stomach for what she imagined felt like Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point, if she was
brave enough to ride it.With a pop, Alyssa landed on the soft, recognizable carpet of her bedroom floor. She
sighed with relief, lying still for a moment. When she heard a second pop, she knew she was in
trouble.Questions:Activity: In 1878, current technologies, such as computers and cell phones, didn’t exist.
How do you think President Hayes and his opponents campaigned for presidency? Compare and contrast those
strategies with what the current politicians use. Be sure to refer to your local newspaper and the internet
for ideas.Activity: The theme of the 134th Easter Egg Roll was "Let’s Go, Let’s Play, Let’s Move."
The White House currently has tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a bowling alley, but it didn’t have these
things in 1878. Imagine how Fanny Hayes would stay active. Make a list of games and activities you think she
would have played, and then maybe try one of these activities with your friends.Activity: Research how the
Electoral College works. Why would it be controversial that President Hayes was elected as president through
the Electoral College rather than popular vote? During Social Studies class, enact President’s Hayes run for
presidency. Remember to include a running mate, vice presidents, voters, and an Electoral College.Writing

acá. Esas prendas causarán alarma.” Alyssa miró sus jeans y camiseta de rayas y luego alzó la vista al
espléndido vestido de Fanny que contaba con una falda apretada y cola enorme. Alyssa se preguntó cómo se
podría jugar afuera en semejante vestido.Fanny deslizó con gracia por la puerta, dejándola entreabierta.
Alyssa podía oír personas hablando en voz alta. Sin duda una de las voces sería el presidente Hayes. Se
asomó por detrás de la puerta mientas se aferraba del pomo, y vio un objeto conocido en la mesa del
corredor: el fonógrafo de Thomas Edison. De repente Alyssa sintió gran añoranza. No necesitaba limonada.
Necesitaba a su familia.En ese momento Fanny subió la escalera.“Oye, Fanny, tengo que volver a casa. Todo
esto es bien interesante, pero mis padres se van a preocupar. Me podrías ayudar?”Fanny puso las limonadas en
la mesa y frunció el ceño. “Esperaba que te quedaras más. Pero comprendo.” Fanny caminó a una muñeca grande
que estaba sentada en el rincón.“Esta es una muñeca parlante que Thomas Edison me hizo. Le daré vueltas al
fonógrafo en la espalda. Cuando comience a hablar, necesitas apretarla y decirle el año y el lugar adonde

Movámonos.” Hoy en día la Casa Blanca cuenta con canchas de tenis, una piscina, y una bolera, pero no era
así en 1878. Imagínate cómo Fanny Hayes se habría mantenido activa. Haz una lista de juegos y actividades
que piensas que ella habría jugado y luego intenta hacer una de estas actividades con tus amigos.Actividad:
Investiga cómo funciona el Electoral College. Por qué causaría controversia que el presidente Hayes fuera
elegido por el Electoral College en vez de con el voto popular? En la clase de estudios sociales, haz una
representación dramática de la campaña política del presidente Hayes a la presidencia. No te olvides de
