WESTON - The Village of Weston Council officials are now going to be paid with a different structure.
Declaring an emergency, the council voted unanimously to alter their pay from a per-meeting basis to a salary structure.
Sarah Schroeder, the fiscal officer for the village, explained that the change needed to be made to allow their pay schedules to be in line with practices for the members to participate in the Public Employees Retirement System.
Schroeder said she attended a PERS meeting and learned that in order to participate in PERS, the payment can not be per meeting, per run, per anything. The total payment to the council members will not change, just the wording of the structure of that payment had to be modified. With the language included, the payment will be retroactive to the start of the year.
"It's not just us," she told the council. "There were a lot of people who were surprised."
Council member Dawn Blandy told her fellow council members that the cemetery board is looking to raise burial rates. She also said the board is likely to place its renewal levy on the ballot in May.
Schroeder also noted only a few minor details need to be resolved before the village purchases the old Weston Elementary property.
Council also passed an addition to its employee handbook regarding fraternization.
Council President Mark Sheffer said the policy is patterned after others. There have been no issues, it was just a standard policy that should have been included with the handbook that was originally omitted.
