WATERVILLE - Pioneer Days will return to Northwest Ohio as demonstrated by artisans and crafters on the campus of the Waterville Historical Society Roche de Boeuf Day Saturday.
Children may participate in activities such as butter churning, corn shelling, rope making and tin punching while learning an appreciation of the skills our early settlers used in their daily lives.
The 1838 Robbins House and the 1834 Sargent House museums on South River Road will be open for tours with a harpist and pump organist performing inside the Robbins House and a singing minstrel outside. An Indian Trading Post encampment with re-enactors will be in the back yard of the Sargent House.
Blacksmithing, basket weaving, soap making, bee keeping, wood carving, spinning, quilting and rug making are some of the other pioneer arts that will be in and around the museums. Children will also have a coloring table, Indian face painting and a magician will entertain. A small stage at South and River roads will feature storytelling for kids at 11 a.m., square dancing at noon, dramatic stories of days of old at 1:30 p.m., and banjo playing at 2 p.m.
A silent auction table will feature a hand blown vase signed and dated by Brian Lonsway with swirls of pink and white flowing through the six inch art glass. A doll house similar to one owned by President Rutherford B. Hayes' daughter, filled with miniatures, will also be offered, as well as framed works of art, including a Walter Chapman print, a Dave Myerholtz print and a primitive type painting.
An Attic Treasures tent will have a wide variety of collectibles for sale, an information booth with discounted books published by the society, and a parking lot at Wakeman Hall will all help the society raise funds to maintain their museums and offer free programs throughout the year.
