In researching The War of 1812 for PBS, we relie on geneology sites to get a sense of who was in the militia, both Canadian and U.S. Although records can be slim, they are also fascinating. One Kentucky archive led us to William Atherton, whose 1830 memoir of the war is a chronicle of battle, imprisonment and redemption. Film can be seen online at www.pbs.org/1812
