MILLBURY – A Walbridge mom says the Lake School District should kick a student council fundraiser to the curb.
Virginia Holmes said donkey basketball, which is scheduled for tonight at Lake High School, is cruel and teaches children terrible life lessons.
She’s hoping that media interviews and an online petition will raise awareness about the cruelty of the game.
“It is not a family event,” Holmes said.
Donkey basketball, she said, teaches children that it’s OK to bully an animal into performing. The audience at an event like this often mocks the donkeys and riders. People fall from the donkeys and often push, pull or hit them, she said.
Holmes sent letters to Lake administrators, including Superintendent Jim Witt, asking that the event be canceled. Witt, she said, told her Lake had a contact with the company that would be difficult to break and the money was being counted on from the fundraiser.
Holmes said she became more concerned when she wasn’t assured that the fundraiser would be pulled for next year.
“Even if it’s tradition, some traditions are no good.”
Tickets at the door are $8. Children ages 6 and under are free.
