PERRYSBURG - The Hospice of Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Threshold Choir is playing host to fellow choir members from throughout the region during their annual conference Friday through Sunday.
The three-day gathering will take place at Grace Methodist Church, 601 East Boundary St.
A Threshold Choir is typically comprised of all female voices singing at the bedside to bring comfort and ease to those on the threshold of living and dying. It is all done in rounds, chants and lullabies - to hymns, spirituals or choral music. Family members are invited to join in the singing, which follows an ancient tradition.
Amey Raihala, Hospice of Northwest Ohio registered nurse and Threshold Choir member, said "When we are invited to the bedside, we visit in small groups. We invite families and caregivers to join or simply listen. We choose songs that appeal to the patient's taste and spiritual direction. Families tell us they feel the songs bring a profound sense of peace to their dying loved ones. The response has been positive and very meaningful for all involved."
Founder of the Threshold Choir movement, Kate Munger will be among those attending the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to sing along with and learn from her.
The Threshold Choir movement was founded in March 2001, in California.
The Hospice of Northwest Ohio choir was formed in 2008 and is comprised of Hospice staff and volunteers.
